Prodotto da Do The Right Films

We Were Here unveils the largely overlooked history of Africans and Black Europeans during the Renaissance, through the lens of the masterpieces in which they were portrayed. Shot across six countries — Italy, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands — Fred Kudjo Kuwornu's film takes viewers on a journey that redraws the cultural geography of the European continent, restoring voice and dignity to figures long forgotten or reduced to background detail: ambassadors, princes, merchants, clergy, scholars, knights and artists. Among the stories the film reconstructs are those of Saint Benedict "the Moor", co-patron of Palermo; the ambassador Ne Vunda, buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome; the Portuguese knight João de Sá Panasco, member of the Order of Santiago; the painter Juan de Pareja, a former slave and assistant of Velázquez who later emerged as a master in his own right; Juan Latino, the first Afro-descendant professor at a European university; and Alessandro de' Medici, the first Duke of Florence and the probable son of an African woman. Weaving together interviews with leading historians, curators and activists with cinematic re-enactments of Renaissance artworks, Kuwornu offers a work of "historical remixing" that interrogates Eurocentric narratives of art and identity, and challenges at its root the notion of Europe as an exclusively white continent. The film had its world premiere at the Central Pavilion of the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia (2024), in the section Foreigners Everywhere curated by Adriano Pedrosa, and has since been presented at universities, museums and festivals worldwide, including the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid. Produced by Do The Right Films.

REGISTA

Nato e cresciuto in Italia, vive e lavora a New York; possiede la tripla cittadinanza italiana, ghanese e statunitense.
